Peripheral Nerve Center
The peripheral nerves serve as a communication network connecting the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. Symptoms of peripheral nerve disorders include weakness, numbness and pain, as well as burning, prickling or tingling sensations.
The UCSF Peripheral Nerve Center provides advanced care for a variety of peripheral nerve issues. We care for injuries and conditions caused by compressed nerves, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, with treatments ranging from nerve block injections for pain relief to surgical repair of damaged nerves.
We also have expertise in treating peripheral nerve tumors, including neurofibromas and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Peripheral nerve tumors can arise spontaneously but are often found in people with certain genetic conditions, such as neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1), for which UCSF also offers specialized care.
Our clinic's team includes neurologists, neurosurgeons and – when needed – orthopedic surgeons. During surgery, an electrophysiologist may join the team to assess nerve function and help guide the procedure, ensuring the best possible outcome. Together, our specialists work to relieve pain and restore function for every patient.
